Character Education

Children who study martial arts benefit tremendously in the area of education. They are taught to work hard, to never give up and to give their all in everything they do. These school-aged children perform well because they are goal oriented, focused, and have excellent memorization skills due to their training at the Western New York Karate Center.

“Our school is based upon a foundation of courtesy and respect which helps in all areas of life. We develop positive character traits, including but not limited to honesty, respect, responsibility, compassion, self-discipline, perseverance and giving to others,” says founder and owner Shihan (Master) Jim Cvetkovski.

The Student Creed is recited daily as a reminder to think and act positively. It emphasizes discipline and self-control. This helps children resist negative peer pressure and bad influences in their lives.

The students recite the following at the start of each class:
“I will strive to develop myself in a positive manner and to avoid anything that would reduce my mental growth or my physical health. I will strive to develop self-discipline in order to bring out the best in myself and others. I will strive to use my martial development constructively and defensively; to help myself and others, and never to be abusive or offensive.”

The Western New York Karate Center is an accredited character education facility. The young people are taught to:
  • Develop good self-esteem as a product of responsible behavior
  • Assume responsibility for their actions
  • Know “right” from “wrong”
  • Respect the rights of others
  • Maximize their use of time and talents
  • Work cooperatively with others
  • Promote good decision-making and problem-solving skills
  • Use self-discipline to achieve goals
  • Avoid drugs, alcohol, cigarettes and those who choose to indulge in any of these

Karate is an excellent activity for students. It truly makes a difference in their lives behaviorally, scholastically and physically. The principles that are learned at this center impact the students at any age. The classes end with “Black Belt Principles” including modesty, courtesy, integrity, self-control, perseverance and indomitable spirit. It is the code of conduct by which our students are expected to live their lives.
